Soumakh runner

Soumak is a method of making handcrafted carpets with raised patterns. This ancient weaving technique, dating back to the 7th century BC, is still popular in parts of Persia and the Caucasus. In Soumak carpets, the colored weft threads of the pattern lie obliquely to the horizontal, and by changing the angle of alternating rows, V-shaped rows with parallel lines are created. On the back of the carpet, the loose ends of the pattern yarns hang freely, forming a padding; this rugged backside distinguishes it from the Kelim, which is smooth on both sides. Repeating diamond and star medallions are as common in Soumak carpets as the elaborate borders. Verneh and Sileh are two famous Soumak patterns.

There are many saddle bags from tribes—and even bedding—that are woven from Soumak. We have assembled a refined collection of Soumakh carpets to equip your home with an essential complementary piece.
