Soumakh (148x106cm)
Soumakh
Soumak is a method of making handmade rugs with raised designs. This ancient weaving technique, which dates back to the 7th century BC, is still in fashion in parts of Persia and the Caucasus. In the soumak rug, the colored weft threads of the pattern are placed at an angle to the horizontal, and by changing the angle of the alternating rows, V-shaped rows of parallel lines are created. On the back of the rug, the loose ends of the pattern yarns hang freely, forming a padding; this rugged back distinguishes it from the kilim, which is smooth on both sides. Repeating diamond and star medallions are common in soumak rugs, as are the elaborate borders. Verneh and Sileh are two famous soumak patterns.
There are many tribal saddlebags - and even bed linens - woven from soumak. We have put together a sophisticated collection of soumakh rugs to furnish your home with an essential complementary piece.
