Formerly pastoral nomads, now village settlers around the city of Shiraz in Fars Province, Iran, Qashqai people are a tribal confederation. Their famous Qashqai rug is made of wool in its entirety with ivory warps, natural-color or red wefts and selvedges of different colors. Unlike their Gabbehs, Qashqai weavers use asymmetric knots – Persian knot – in their rug. The “Qashqai medallion” embodying the true nomadic tradition is the predominant design of the rug. The use of vegetable dyes secures the jewel-toned colors dyed in the handspun wool yarn. Red, blue, and ivory constitute the default color scheme of this rug.
